Heart + Hand Outreach Ministries, Inc.

Meet Jenny Keener, Volunteer and Community Outreach Coordinator at Heart + Hand Outreach Ministries, as she shares how this South Charleston-based organization uplifts thousands of individuals and families every year across Kanawha and Putnam counties. Heart + Hand provides essential services with dignity and compassion.

Each year, Heart + Hand assists over 15,000 people through their food pantry, clothing and household vouchers, and other community-centered programs made possible through generous local donations. Every day, they distribute 15 to 25 carts full of groceries to families in need. One unique touch that sets their food pantry apart is the inclusion of birthday kits—special packages filled with everything needed to celebrate a child’s or family member’s birthday, reminding clients that they are seen, valued, and celebrated.

Heart + Hand’s mission goes beyond meeting basic needs. Their thrift store voucher program allows clients to select clothing and household items with pride, boosting self-confidence for school, work, or life’s next steps. Whether it’s picking out a new hoodie or finding the right outfit for a job interview, the experience is designed to uplift and restore dignity.

Jenny highlights how the volunteer program brings people from all backgrounds together for a shared purpose—building a stronger, more caring community. For the past eight years, The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation has been a key partner in this mission, providing essential funding for food, utility assistance, and other critical services. Their ongoing support and personal involvement help Heart + Hand continue expanding its impact.

Jenny closes by expressing gratitude for the recognition as a 2025 Change Maker Award recipient and hopes the visibility inspires more individuals to seek the help they need. Heart + Hand stands ready to serve even more neighbors, reaching farther into the community to ensure no one feels alone in their time of need.
