How Mountain Mission Is Meeting Basic Needs Across the Greater Kanawha Valley

Mountain Mission Incorporated has been serving people across the Greater Kanawha Valley for nearly 100 years. Based on the west side of Charleston, the organization provides practical support to individuals and families facing some of life’s most difficult circumstances.

Led by Executive Director John Roberts, Mountain Mission exists to help people with basic needs such as food, clothing, medication, utilities, furniture, school supplies, and emergency assistance. The organization serves people who have been evicted, burned out, flooded out, affected by illness, impacted by job loss, or forced to rebuild after domestic violence.

At the heart of Mountain Mission’s work is a simple but powerful motto: “Helping people and improving lives.” For Roberts and the team, that means meeting people where they are, without judgment, and offering support when they need it most.

Many of the people who come to Mountain Mission are facing circumstances beyond their control. A sudden illness, a lost job, the cost of medical treatment, a house fire, a flood, or a utility shutoff can quickly place a family in crisis. Mountain Mission steps in to help stabilize those situations, making sure people can keep food in their homes, clothes on their backs, and basic necessities in place.

One of the organization’s key services is its Emergency Assistance Program. This program helps people whose utilities are at risk of termination, provides food for families, and offers furniture and household support for those recovering from disaster or violence. It is a flexible and deeply needed program designed to respond to real-life emergencies in practical ways.

The Emergency Assistance Program is funded in part by the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation. That support helps Mountain Mission continue serving people throughout the region and ensures that families facing hardship have somewhere to turn.

As Mountain Mission approaches its 100th anniversary in October 2026, the organization’s legacy of service continues to grow. Roberts, who has been part of Mountain Mission for 25 years, said it is meaningful to know the organization can have a positive impact on people’s lives, not only in the moment, but for years to come.

That impact can continue long after someone receives help. Roberts hopes that those who have been blessed through Mountain Mission may one day be able to pass that blessing forward to someone else.

Being recognized as a changemaker is an honor for Mountain Mission. While Roberts said he had not always thought of the organization in that way, the phrase fits the work they do every day. Helping people and improving lives is, in its own way, creating change.

Mountain Mission is grateful for its partnership with the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation and for the support that helps carry out its ministry. Together, they are helping meet basic needs, restore dignity, and bring hope to people across the Greater Kanawha Valley.
