Eligibility
OVERVIEW
- The Kanawha Valley Council on Philanthropy (KVCOP) Charleston West Side Community Initiative was created by a subset of the KVCOP funders.
- This initiative seeks to improve the economy, health, or quality of life for citizens of the Westside.
- It is a partnership with the Westside Together Initiative of the McGee Foundation.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must:
- Be a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization as designated by the IRS or a government entity
- Provide services for the Westside of Charleston, West Virginia
USE OF FUNDS
Grant awards will be up to $30,000 in the following categories:
Community/Economic Development – a project that influences growth and restructuring of the economy to enhance the economic well-being of the Westside. It seeks to empower individuals with skills to positively impact change on the Westside.
Health – a project that seeks to improve the health of community members through education, services, or other interventions.
Quality of Life – a project that provides support to families through parent and/or guardian skills training, education, or other interventions; may improve a family’s sense of satisfaction through:
- Health and Well-Being
- Safety
- Social Interactions
- Access to Services
PROCESS
Applicants will develop outcomes for each project’s progress. Outcomes point to an issue or condition and help the community understand where they are, which way they are going, and how far they are from where they want to be. Effective outcomes are relevant, measurable, and show improvement or change in the issue area.
- Each applicant must complete the online application. All required materials as outlined in the grant application instructions, must be received electronically via the online application by the deadline of 4:00 pm on June 19, 2023.
- Only one application per organization is allowable. The Lead Applicant is the nonprofit, charitable 501(c)3 organization or government entity that will have the primary responsibility of accounting for the funds granted and ensuring that the project as well as the final report, with receipts (available upon request), are completed.
- Projects must be completed within 12 months from when the funds are distributed.
- The KVCOP will review each application and announce the selected grantees in July of 2023.
- All grantees will be required to submit a final report outlining their activities, outputs, outcomes, and project expenditures.

Uploading a Placeholder Document to the Attachments Tab:
There may be a time during the application process where you do not have anything to upload for a document that is required in the application. However, the way our system processes documents means that the system will think that you are missing documents if you haven’t uploaded a document for all documents that are marked as required on the attachments tab. We’ve created a walkthrough document to help you through this process.

The Kanawha Valley Council on Philanthropy (KVCOP) is a learning network of local funders. It serves as an opportunity for funders to come together to hear what’s happening in the community, to share information and knowledge, to leverage and maximize resources, and to explore potential strategies for making more effective grants.
The Kanawha Valley Council on Philanthropy has worked to implement a grants program through its Community Initiative. For the past several years, the Council has focused its Community Initiative efforts specifically on the West Side of Charleston. A placed-based initiative requires a researched, strategic approach to help with the variety of needs on Charleston’s West Side. To date, the council has seen much progress, including stronger grantees with more capacity, leveraged dollars from national sources, and increased participation among Council funders.
The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation serves has administrative support for the KVCOP. Currently, the council is not accepting new applications.
