Join Chad Morrison, CEO of Mountaineer Food Bank, as he shares how the organization is fighting hunger across West Virginia. Based in Gassaway, Mountaineer Food Bank serves as the state’s largest hunger relief network, distributing food through a network of over 460 partner agencies, including food pantries, meal programs, and community feeding sites. In 2024 alone, the food bank reached a milestone, distributing more than 29.8 million pounds of food across 48 counties—the largest annual total in its 43-year history.
Chad explains that the need is great, with 1 in 7 West Virginians facing hunger. That’s why the food bank’s efforts are focused on helping the most vulnerable: children, seniors, and veterans. One of their newest innovations is the Extra Mile Program, designed to reach children and families in rural communities. This program partners with school systems to deliver food directly to families, using school bus drivers to overcome transportation, financial, and social barriers. By keeping participation confidential, the program empowers students to seek the help they need without fear of stigma.
Chad highlights the critical role of partners like The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation, whose financial support makes innovative programs like Extra Mile possible. Thanks to their partnership, Mountaineer Food Bank has been able to expand services in Clay County, providing nutritious food and hope to families who might otherwise go without.
While Mountaineer Food Bank doesn’t do this work for recognition, Chad acknowledges the importance of community support in making their mission a reality. Every meal distributed brings a moment of hope to someone in need, and that’s what drives the team every day.
