It is an honor to greet you as the new CEO of the YWCA Charleston. As someone newly planted in West Virginia’s capital city, I am both humbled and inspired by the rich history, courageous people, and vibrant community spirit that define this region. While I am new to Charleston, I am not new to the mission of equity, empowerment, and change. And I am proud to join a team of passionate leaders, advocates, and community partners at the YWCA Charleston who embody these values every day.
The YWCA Charleston has been a cornerstone of this community for more than 110 years. Through civil rights movements, economic crises, natural disasters, and global pandemics, we have stood in the gap. Our mission is simple but bold: Eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. That mission lives and breathes through our programs, our people, and our partnerships.
One of our most vital areas of service is the YWCA Resolve Family Abuse Program, a comprehensive response to domestic violence. In West Virginia, where the need is urgent and often under-resourced, our shelter provides a safe haven for women and children fleeing violence. We don’t just offer safety; we offer hope – through advocacy, counseling, legal support, and transitional housing. Each family we serve reminds us that healing is possible and that everyone deserves a life free from fear.
Another pillar of our work is the YWCA Sojourner’s Shelter for Homeless Women & Families, where dignity meets opportunity. Here, women – many with children in tow – find more than a bed. They find compassionate support and wraparound services, including job readiness, financial literacy, and permanent housing placement. Every success story that begins at Sojourner’s is a testament to the power of a second chance.
We are also investing in the future through the YWCA Mel Wolf Child Development Center, where we provide high-quality, affordable early childhood education. For many working families, especially single mothers, access to childcare is not a luxury – it’s a lifeline. At Mel Wolf, children are nurtured in safe, inclusive, and stimulating environments that build strong foundations for lifelong learning.
Just as we care for the youngest in our community, we honor victims of elder abuse through the YWCA Shanklin Center for Senior Enrichment and Empowerment Homes. This vital program provides older adult women with affordable, permanent housing, daily activities, nutritious meals, and the chance to stay socially connected and physically active. For many seniors, the Shanklin Center is a lifeline to community and purpose, reducing isolation and promoting well-being in the later chapters of life.
But our work doesn’t end there. Through social justice and civic engagement initiatives at the YWCA Dooley Community Enrichment program, we amplify the voices of those often overlooked and unheard. We are building bridges across cultures, generations, and communities to foster understanding and dismantle systems of inequality. Our annual Race to End Racism, community conversations, educational workshops and seminars, supportive community resources, and youth programming are bold steps toward the inclusive future we envision. In every corner of our work, you will find the fingerprints of dedicated staff, volunteers, donors, and partners. And as the new CEO, I am committed to growing that circle, welcoming those who believe in justice and equity to walk with us.
As we look ahead, we do so with a clear-eyed view of the challenges of navigating growing uncertainty in federal funding – funding that is critical to keeping our shelters open, our programs staffed, and our families supported, but also with unwavering hope. While our mission remains steadfast, we must rely more heavily on individual donors, corporate partners, and community champions to stand in the gap. The YWCA Charleston is rooted in resilience and rising in hope, together with you.
If you believe in a Charleston where every woman and child is safe, sheltered, and seen, I invite you to make a gift today. Your generosity will directly support services that empower women, lift families, and create real, lasting change. You can donate at www.ywcacharleston.org/donate.
I want to thank The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation for its continued investment in the nonprofit sector and for inviting me to share this space. Your commitment to collective impact is helping organizations like ours move from surviving to thriving.
Together, let’s continue building a community where everyone – regardless of race, gender, or circumstance – has the opportunity not only to survive but to soar.
