The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation’s scholarship program has been supporting West Virginia students for over 40 years. TGKVF manages more than 115 scholarship funds created by individuals, businesses, and organizations dedicated to helping WV residents pursue higher education. This competitive program awards scholarships to over 500 students annually.
Monies received for tuition, fees, and books may not incur tax liability; however, monies applied to room and board may be considered taxable income. This award must be applied to direct college expenses at the institution, such as tuition, fees, and books. The recipient is responsible for any tax liability incurred as a result of this award. The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation does not provide tax information to the student or the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The student is fully responsible for all tax reports.
TGKVF scholarships vary in amount from $1,000 to $12,000. While the average award is approximately $3,000, the exact amount can vary based on a range of factors.
Some scholarships are specific to a single college or university; others are applicable at any post-secondary institution. Many scholarships are for schools in West Virginia; however, some allow students to attend school out-of-state. All educational institutions must meet applicable federal tax law requirements under Internal Revenue Code, Section 170(6)(1)(A)(ii). Each scholarship’s criteria is listed in its description on the Available Scholarships page.
You may receive only one scholarship from TGKVF, with two exceptions: The TGKVF Scholars Fund, which can be combined with another TGKVF scholarship, and the Thalheimer Fund, a supplemental opportunity for students who receive a primary TGKVF scholarship. The application link for the Thalheimer Fund is included within award notifications in May and can be applied for at that time.
A student who withdraws from school for any reason is expected to notify The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation of his or her status and refund to the Foundation any unused portion of the scholarship award.
No. General Scholarship checks are sent directly to the student’s institution.
No. Not all scholarship opportunities are renewable. Those that are eligible for renewal(s) require the submission of a follow-up form, automatically available in the student’s TGKVF Scholarship Portal on opening day of the application. Those submissions are competitive and are at the Committee’s discretion. Students who received a non-renewable scholarship are eligible to apply as a new applicant the following year.
No, IRS tax forms are not needed for application submission.
The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation does not send notification of award in May but sends check(s) and accompanying letter to institutions in July.
Yes! Unless the scholarship Fund specifies otherwise (e.g. only graduating senior from a specific High School) then you are eligible to apply at any point of your academic year.
If you transfer schools, you are expected to notify TGKVF via email at
emccormick@tgkvf.org. Within that email, please provide:
